About WIRED West Michigan

In 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration launched the WIRED (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development) initiative, making federal grant dollars available to assist regions in creating and implementing economic development strategies.

In an effort spearheaded by the West Michigan Strategic Alliance (WMSA), a consortium in the
West Michigan region applied for and received one of the 13 First Generation WIRED grants. The three-year, $15 million grant worked to help West Michigan overcome many of its workforce, education and economic challenges by providing the funding necessary to advance several regional initiatives.

What is WIRED West Michigan?

In order to equip West Michigan with the talent, tools and vision to compete in today’s changing economy, WIRED West Michigan utilized its federal grant dollars to launch multiple region-wide initiatives – known as INNOVATIONS– ranging from new approaches in skills training and measurement to new systems for accelerating entrepreneurship.
