In December 2005, the West Michigan Strategic Alliance and its regional partners created a framework and vision for WIRED West Michigan and applied for a $15 million U.S. Department of Labor WIRED grant.

DOL announced the WIRED First Generation Regions after a competitive process for the grant awards. West Michigan was one of 13 regions across the country selected to transform and revitalize its local economy.

In April 2006, WIRED West Michigan launched 12 “Innovations” ranging from new approaches in skills training to new systems for accelerating entrepreneurship, each with the potential to drive long-term growth.

In July 2006, WIRED West Michigan appointed 15 leaders in West Michigan to its Policy Council. These individuals play an integral role in the ongoing oversight and approval of each WIRED Innovation.

As of September 2006, all 12 WIRED Innovations were underway – most beginning in the initial planning and development, with the second phase of development to begin early 2007.
